Cumulative Reflection
In general, I enjoyed my education life in ISU for the past four years. As an international student, I think all my professors and classmates are friendly and accommodating. As one of populous engineering students, I lived in an intense engineering environment every day. No matter if the course is simple or difficult, it motivated me to put big efforts in and made me stuff myself during every semester. At the beginning of my college, I enjoyed lots of social time with my new friends and they made me feel it is the real, wonderful and expected college life I’ve never been lived. As time goes along, my courses became more and more difficult and then I spend countless hours doing labs and doing assignments. And sometimes, when there were too many tasks waited to be done at the same time, I have to get used to being alone to stay in the computer lab for even a whole night and tried my best to accomplish them. However, all these arduous experience finally became my wealth. Now, I found I’m more like an engineer than four years before. Engineering study life taught me to think everything I’m facing and will face mutually with delicate logic rather than make movement imprudently. Now, I know ways of handling an issue systematically which means I can make plan and design process as what I expected.
Almost all my engineering courses require lab sessions to enhance our learning. Thus I obtained plenty of experiences of working with others. I understand how important cooperation is in the group working and I feel comfortable to accept assignments in a group and I feel free to communicate and give a solution when working with others together.
Since my first year, there was electrical engineering orientation class that guided us on track immediately and then every year there was required class which helped us manage our education plan or taught us basic engineering responsibility to led us toward academic success. These classes are necessary for us because they give us an opportunity to stop and think and organize our academic life during intense learning semester. We give feedback to the instructor and also at the same time rethink what we want.
In a fundamental major course like EE201 (electrical circuits), EE185 (EE problem solving) and other introduction level class, I almost only needed to finish the homework and assignments within the lecture coverage. However, when I took higher level classes, I did do lots of works beyond my lecture and textbook. For example, EE330 VLSI, the most difficult class I’ve ever taken. The material of this class is really plentiful provided by my professor, but when I went through lab sessions and designed projects, I searched a lot and read a lot and for my final project, I studied how to programming for Arduino and asked much help from other students and teachers. In my opinion, asking instructors as frequently as possible is the best and most reliable way to strengthen study. I liked to use office hours and made appointments with professors for asking help. Of course, asking help from TAs and other classmates is also a wonderful method to complete work but I think professor himself or herself understand the assignments given comprehensively and he or she can ensure me active learning rather than present answers or imparting solutions.
Unstoppable is the vital word my college taught me. We don’t mean to be a researcher or pedant in our field, while, we need never stop to accept new information and try new things to explore our education range. I’m doing tutoring program now because I want to overcome my shyness in front of people and I want to share my way to learn to new students for help.
If I were able to retake my college work again, I would spend more time to attend social life because by now I understand that knowledge is never been obtained enough and the most important thing we learned in the four years is the positive and optimist’s attitude to gain new stuff without stop. However, the social skills and the ways to being a better man should be learned as early as possible. We all need well-prepared for our future life after step into the practical world and no one want to be a greenhorn for a long time, so social skills and nice personality can most help reduce the time length.
All in all, I enjoyed my life in ISU and I don’t feel regret choose to be an electrical engineering student. I do recommend you can start your adventure here.
